DePuy ASR Hip Failure Recall

In July 2010, the FDA issued a DePuy ASR hip recall as a result of the high rate of failure of these hip implants. Many of the DePuy ASR hip implant problems arise from the defective design of the replacement hip cup. The hip replacement cup is shallower than cups in similar hip systems, and does not always affix to the bone as it was designed to. In many cases, this results in the loosening of the hip implant, often requiring DePuy ASR hip implant revision surgery.

Other notable DePuy ASR hip problems arise from the metal-on-metal construction of the hip replacement system. A condition known as metallosis can arise when the metal parts of the DePuy ASR hip rub against each other, releasing metal particles into the body and causing chromium and cobalt blood toxicity. The metal debris released by the DePuy ASR hip can cause severe inflammatory reactions in some patients, leading to muscle damage, soft tissue damage, and potential bone loss. Often, hip replacement revision surgery is necessary as a result of metallosis caused by the metal-on-metal construction of the faulty DePuy ASR hip system.

DePuy Pinnacle Hip

While no DePuy Pinnacle hip implant recall has been ordered, hip implant manufacturer Johnson & Johnson has received numerous complaints about this defective medical device. This metal-on-metal hip replacement system is made of a cobalt-chromium alloy. When the parts of these hip implants begin to wear prematurely, the patient’s body may absorb a substantial amount of metal debris, leading to inflammatory reactions and metallosis as a result of elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in their bodies.

In addition to the risk of metallosis posed by the DePuy Pinnacle hip, a number of other serious and painful issues have arisen for hip implant patients, such as:

  • Unexplained pain
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • DePuy Pinnacle hip implant loosening
  • Clicking or popping in the hip region
  • Hip replacement failure
  • DePuy hip revision surgery
