Stryker Modular Hip Problems

The Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular hip systems were fast-tracked through the FDA approval process because they were deemed to be similar to a product that was already approved and on the market, the Stryker Modular Hip released in 2007. Unfortunately, after these devices were approved and released, significant design flaws were identified in the previous model. The metal-on-metal construction of the femoral stem and neck components has caused toxic shards of metal to be released into the blood stream. This can lead to a number of severe consequences, including a form of metal poisoning known as metallosis. Injuries and problems sustained by patients implanted with the Stryker hips include:

  • Bone dissolution (osteolysis)
  • Bone and tissue death (necrosis)
  • Corrosion or Fretting of the implant
  • Pseudo-tumors
  • Fluid accumulation in the hip joint
  • Allergic reactions
  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Changes to the DNA
  • Decreased lymphocyte and CD8+T cells which fight infections and pathogens
  • Broken bones
  • Loosening of the implant
  • Noise from the implant
  • Fretting and corrosion of the implant components

Stryker Rejuvenate Modular Hip System Lawsuits

As a medical device manufacturer, Stryker Orthopaedics has the responsibility to design products that are safe, and to warn of any potential safety issues before innocent patients are hurt. Stryker issued an Urgent Field Safety Notice for the Rejuvenate hip system in April 2012, revealing that implant recipients may be at risk for metallosis, a very dangerous form of metal poisoning. This notice came three years after the device was released, and in a Stryker hip lawsuit our attorneys in St. Louis argue that Stryker was or should have been aware of design defects in the Rejuvenate and ABG II hips that could cause significant injury to implant recipients. In medical product liability lawsuits, victims who suffered after implantation with Stryker hips may be able to collect compensation for their damages, which include medical bills, lost wages, and considerable pain and suffering.

The Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Recall and ABG II Hip Recall

In July 2012, Stryker issued a voluntary recall of the Rejuvenate Modular Hip system. This recall came on the heels of numerous reports of serious injury and painful revision surgery that resulted from admitted design defects in the device. In the recall notice, Stryker admits to these design flaws, stating that “fretting and/or corrosion at or about the modular-neck junction…may result in adverse local tissue reactions manifesting with pain and/or swelling.” This device was also recalled in Canada in May 2012.
